International flights arrive in Costa Rica at the Juan Santamaria International Airport, located about 20 minutes outside of San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. The fastest way to get to Montezuma is by plane, which involves a 20 minute flight to Tambor, then a 30 minute taxi ride from there.
To book flights from San Jose to Tambor visit: Nature Air www.natureair.com or Sansa www.flysansa.com
Alternatively, you may like to fly into San Jose, hire a four wheel drive and take a few days to leisurely traverse the roughly six hour drive to Montezuma which includes a scenic and relaxing one hour ferry trip from Puntarenas to the Nicoya Peninsula. From there, Montezuma is just a 45 minute drive.
If you do decide to drive yourself to Montezuma please be prepared for the road quality which can be quite rough with corrugations and potholes. Many of the roads in Costa Rica may better described as dirt tracks and one must take the drive slowly and carefully in some places.
On your way to Montezuma you might like to stop for lunch at the Lands in Love vegetarian and vegan eco-resort and restaurant, just two hours out of San Jose or explore the Monteverde Cloud Forests, the therapeutic Hot Springs at La Fortuna or Arenal Volcano.
There is a direct bus service from San Jose to Montezuma. This bus leaves every day from the Coca Cola bus station in downtown San Jose at approximately 6:00am and 2:00pm. The cost is approximately $12.00 US. The Coca Cola bus station is a 20 minute (about $20.00) taxi ride from the international airport. The bus trip to Montezuma takes about 6 hours in total with one rest stop between San Jose and Puntarenas. In Puntarenas you will get off the bus and the driver will issue you with a ferry ticket and laminated card that you will need to get back on the bus. Follow the bus crowd onto the ferry for a beautiful one hour ferry ride. Upon crossing the gulf you will disembark in Paquera. Follow the passengers to the other side of the ferry terminal to re-board the bus and continue the journey to Cobano. In Cobano all passengers going to Montezuma change to another bus, which takes you the final 30 minutes to downtown Montezuma. From there, the retreat venue is a 10 minute taxi ride.
